The route goes north past San Juan and passes through the eerily, ‘out-of-this-world’ landscapes of the Valle de la Luna and close to the red sandstone cliffs of the Talampaya Nat. Park. Day 4: Villa Union [B] A day at leisure. We recommend exploring the national parks and the Moon Valley. Day 5: Belen [B] Departure and drive to Belen (320km-6hrs). The route passes through several small villages, many known for their excellent wines. Day 6: Tafi del Valle [B] After breakfast drive to Tafi del Valle (270km-5hrs). Overnight is a ‘home-stay’ on a traditional Argentinean Estancia. Day 7: Cafayate [B] Breakfast and return to the RN40 north to Cafayate (120kn-2hrs). You’ll find more and more vineyards as you approach the town which has become a centre for wine-based tourism. Overnight on a wine estate. Day 8: Cafayate [B] A full day at leisure to explore the town or you may prefer to visit some of the bodegas surrounding the village. The sculptural artist, Oscar Hipaucha, has a studio and salesroom in the nearby village of Santa Maria. This is well worth a visit. Day 9: Cachi [B] The route today (180km-3hrs) winds along the banks of the Rio Calchaqui with views, on both sides, to the sheer mountainsides and snow-capped peaks of the Andes. It is worth stopping in the village of Molinos to see the adobe buildings and 18thC Iglesia. Day 10: Salta [B] Drive via Cuesta del Obispo to Salta (155km-3hrs). The scenic road descends the Cuesta del Obispo Pass with stunning views of the mountains. On reaching Salta check-in at your hotel. Day 11: Departure [B] After breakfast return the car at the airport depot and your onward arrangements. |
