This exciting 19-day adventure crosses the continent. Commencing in Buenos Aires, the city of tango, and finishing in Lima, founded in 1535 and known then as the ‘City of the Kings’.
After visiting the sites of Buenos Aires and experiencing this cosmopolitan city, transfer to the magnificent Iguassu Falls for two nights. Then, by air, transfer to Salta, located in the centre of the Argentinean winelands. After seeing this colonial city and tasting some of the exquisite wines of the region, the journey continues north into Bolivia, a landlocked country high on the Andean Altiplano. Here the soaring, snow-capped mountain peaks, the desolate salt lakes and incredible landscapes of the Altiplano are sure to leave lasting memories. After visiting La Paz, the world’s highest capital city, we cross Lake Titicaca to Copacabana, Puno and on to Cuzco, the major centre of the Incas. A full day excursion by First Class train and bus takes you to Machu Picchu. After returning to Cuzco with a leisure day to explore the Indian market, fly to Lima for your return or onward flight.

Fifteen days of incredible scenery, Indian markets, colonial Spanish Architecture and, to top it off, a visit to the amazing Lost City of the Inca at Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Cuzco and the Nazca Lines. Once the colonial capital, Cuzco still boasts remnants of one of the Inca’s most important buildings, the Temple of the Sun. Also known as the Korikancha, the temple now forms part of the Spanish Church of Santo Domingo. After returning to Lima for overnight we travel north to the enigmatic Nazca Lines.

ITINERARY

 

Day 1  Lima
Arrival transfer to your hotel for two nights.

 

Day 2: Lima  [B]
A guided tour of Lima includes the best examples of colonial architecture in the city- the Government Palace, Plaza de Armas, the Monastery and more before proceeding to San Isidro and the beaches of the Pacific. Afternoon at leisure.

 

Day 3: Arequipa  [B]
Morning transfers and flight to Arequipa, the ‘White City’. An afternoon tour includes the unusual landscapes, the volcanoes and pre-Inca terraces, and also fine examples of Spanish colonial buildings. Afternoon at leisure.
 

Day 4: Colca Canyon  [BLD]
Start of an exciting 2-day excursion into the spectacular Colca Canyon, 100km long and up to 3.4km deep. We follow the route, past both dormant and active volcanoes, to our overnight hotel in Chivay. Afterwards we visit the Hot Springs of La Calera.
 

Day 5: Puno  [B]
After breakfast we descend to the canyon floor. We might see condors spiralling in the up-drafts. Afterwards transfer by bus to Puno, located on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

 

Day 6: Puno  [B]
A full day excursion to the floating villages of the Aymara Indians on Lake Titicaca. Continue to Taquile Island to see several pre-Inca and Inca terracing. Here the inhabitants still wear traditional dress.

 

Day 7: Cuzco  [BL]
A full-day journey on the Andean Explorer train* leads through the Peruvian highlands, past the snow covered peaks of the Andes and local villages, over high mountain passes reaching 4,3km above sea level. Lunch is served on the train. We disembark on reaching Cuzco.

 

Day 8: Cuzco  [B]
A half-day tour visits the colonial and Incan sites of Cuzco before continuing to Sacsayhuaman, Tambo Nachay, the ‘bath’ of the Inca at Kenko and to Puca Pucara. Afternoon at leisure.

 

Day 9: Cuzco  [B]
Leisure day to explore the markets and city of Cuzco. Optional activities are available locally.

 

Day 10: Yucay  [B]
After transferring to Yucay we visit the Sacred Valley of the Inca and the traditional Indian market in Pisac, renowned for its Indian craft. Return to Yucay situated in the Urubamba Valley.

 

Day 11: Machu Picchu  [B]
A full day excursion by bus to Ollanta, then by train to Aquas Calientes. From there small busses take you to Machu Picchu. After an extensive site visit we return to Yucay via the Sacred Valley.

 

Day 12: Lima   [B]
Transfers and flight to Lima and overnight.


Day 13: Nazca   [BD]
Transfer and board the public bus to Nazca. On arrival visit the Aqueducts of Cantalloc, some 4km north of the town. These are believed to date from about 300AD and are still in use. Afterwards visit the Antonini Museum dedicated to the Nazca Valley and its people, and to Palpa for viewing the Lines themselves.


Day 14: Ica   [B]
Optional morning flight over the Nazca Lines.
Transfer to Ica with visit to local winery enroute. After a tour of the regional museum we visit the Huacachina oasis for some leisure time.


Day 15: Ballestas Islands   [B]
From the Pier we see Candelabro, considered to be the beginning of the Lines, then board the ferry to the Ballestas, home to a wide range of wildlife and distinct flora. Return to the city of Ica on the mainland for a short tour. Afternoon return to Lima for your onward flight.
