ITINERARY Day 1: Tripoli [D] You are met after clearing formalities and transferred to your hotel. The drive provides a first glimpse into the life of the people who live in the capital city. Day 2: Tripoli [BLD] A guided tour of Tripoli, founded by the Phoenicians in 1000 BC and later occupied by the Romans, includes the huge fortress, the National Museum, the old souq and the Islamic quarters. An evening tour includes a stroll through the city and Algeria Square, a Mosque and Dinner. Day 3: Benghazi [BLD] Morning transfer to the airport and flight to Benghazi. A tour of this resort city includes Allied war cemetery, the colourful souk and unique architecture. We also have the opportunity to enjoy tea with the locals. We then continue along the eastern coast to the small town of El Beyda and the ancient ruins of Cyrene, Apollonia, and Slonta. Day 4: Apollonia [BLD] Today you visit to the World Heritage Site of Cyrene. The city was part of the 1st century five city state of Pentapolis and was second in size only to Athens. Cyrene was founded by the Greeks in 631 BC, later occupied by the Romans and then the Arabs. You also visit the famous temples of Zeus and Apollo and, after lunch, the theatre, Roman baths and Byzanyine Palace at Apollonia (Sousa). Day 5: Tripoli [BLD] A morning drive through Jabel Akhdar to Qasr Libya. Here you find the 6thC AD mosaic fragments. The next stop is Ptolemais, the former capital of Pentapolis, to see the palaces, theatres, and Bouleter, a 3rdC bridge. After lunch at a local restaurant and leisure time in Benghazi return to Tripoli by air and transfer to your hotel. Day 6 : Leptis Magna [BLD] The highlight of Libya is the World Heritage Site of Leptis Magna located east of Tripoli. From a Berber settlement it developed into an important Canaanite city and reached its climax under the rule of Roman Emperor Septimus Severus. You visit the vast site including the Triumphal Arch, huge Basilica, Forum, Public Baths, Hippodrome, and Amphitheater etc. Lunch will be at the local restaurant at the site before returning to Tripoli. Day 7: Sabratha [BLD] Amongst all the coastal sites, Sabratha stands out as the most beautiful. A World Heritage Site, Sabratha was founded by the Canaanites (6thC BC), ruled by Carthage, Phoenicia, Numedia and then Rome. The site offers a majestic collection of public buildings, arenas, temples of Liber Peter, Srapis, Isis, and Hercules. Day 8: Sahara Desert [BLD] An exciting day as you head south to the Saharan oasis of Ghadames with an en-route stop at the "ghost town" of Nalut, located high in the Nafusa Mountains. Nalut offers an insight into the traditional lifestyles of the cave-dwelling desert people. Lunch at an oasis before heading deeper into the Sahara. Day 9: Ghadames [BLD] These oases were settled from prehistoric times and were a major port of call for traders and pilgrims en-route to Mecca. Ghadames is a beautiful sleepy desert town that has preserved its original culture, most visibly in the architecture of the town with its labyrinthine passages; mud bricked and gaily decorated streets. Your tour will cover the old town, the mysterious desert and viewing the desert sunset. Lunch will be a typical meal served in the old city. Day 10: Tripoli [BLD] After the Sahara safari we continue to Kabaw village. We see the ghurfas, grain stores built by the Berbers. This is followed by a visit to Tormisa to see the incredible, intact cave structures and the pottery market at Gharian. Continue to Tripoli. Day 11: Departure [B] Leisure time in Tripoli before you are transferred to the airport for your onward flight. |
