We then continue into the desert sand dunes of Wahiba where we find the Bedouin and their camels. We overnight at a Desert Camp deep inside the dunes. At Wadi Bani Khalid we find crystal clear springs and verdant palmeries. We visit a typical Omani village before reaching the coast at Sur, an ancient port city, then follow the coastal road back to Muscat.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Muscat You will hear Ahlan wa Sahlan as you are met on arrival at Muscat airport. Transfer to your hotel with after lunch check-in. Rest of day at leisure.
Day 2: Muscat [B] A leisurely breakfast followed by a tour of Muscat city. First we visit the very beautiful Grand Mosque, then walk through the traditional market and Mattrah Souk in the Old Quarter. A photo-stop is made outside the Sultan’s Palace-flanked by two 16thC Portuguese forts. The afternoon is at leisure for a stroll along the waterfront. 3: Nizwa [BL] Depart after breakfast for an exciting adventure by 4WD. We drive north along the Batinah Coast to the Nakhl Fort located in the foothills of the Western Hajar Mountains. We then continue to a hot-mineral spring, through the Wadi Bani Awf to the remote village of Bilad Seyt. After passing through narrow mountain gorges we reach Nizwa where we overnight.
Day 4: Jebel Shams [BL] Today we visit the fortification at Jabreen- a maze of courtyards, dungeons, towers and secret passages, then continue to the UNESCO listed village of Bahla where we visit ancient potteries and the nearby, Persian village of Ghul. After following a road through rugged canyons we reach Wadi Nakhr, known as Oman’s ‘Grand Canyon’. In the local village we find the Mountain People selling carpets and rugs. We return to Nizwa via the mountain-side village of Misfat al Abrein.
Day 5: Wahiba Sands [BD] After a morning at leisure in Nizwa-allowing time to visit the shops of silversmiths and craftsmen, we drive into the region inhabited by Bedouin. We stop in Sinaw, a typical Bedouin village before reaching the endless sand dunes of Wahiba and our desert camp. From here we take an adventurous 4WD across the steep dunes.
Day 6: Wahiba Sands and Ras al Hadd [B] Leaving the dunes we cross the mountains to Wadi Bani Khalid; an oasis of clear water and verdant palmeries. We encourage you to take a swim in this pristine oasis. We then continue to Ras al Hadd, on the coast, for overnight. In season we may observe the nesting habits of the green turtle.
Day 7: Muscat [BL] We drive to the ancient port city of Sur after breakfast. Here we visit the dhow building yards. We continue via Qalhat and Wadi Shab where we stop for a walk and picnic lunch.Late afternoon arrival in Muscat.
Day 8: Muscat [B] Leisure until your 12noon check-out and transfer to the airport.
