In essence Spain is not really one country, but an amalgamation of several cultures and traditions into one political entity. The country has four official languages and a diverse culture based on its history of Moorish, French, Catalan and other influences. The majestic Pyrenees have always isolated Spain from the rest of Europe , resulting in a country which, today, has an atmosphere very different from its neighbours. Add to this the wealth of Islamic architecture, of which the Al Hambra is perhaps best known, and the incredible cathedrals and other grand buildings dating from the days when Spain practically ‘owned' the precious metal trade from South America . You will find the cities to be dynamic with a hectic ‘live-for-today' hedonism. Spaniards love to eat, drink and be merry. They have a passion for art and drama. Flamenco restaurants alternate with tapas bars and ‘fast food' paella cafes. And between the cities, travelling by rail or coach, you'll find a vast panorama of green fields, orange groves, wheat lands, solitary castles, beaches and secret coves. The following tours include various suggested routes and city stays. Each suggested tour can be modified or extended to suit your individual preferences.
